Announcing Regata Salva Barra, 23 October 2011

The community of Barra de Potosi (Petalan, GRO) announces that it will be hosting a paddling regatta on Sunday October 23, 2011 in Laguna Potosi.  The featured races will be a 1000 meter kayak sprint that will be held at 11 am on Sunday and a 4000 meter kayak endurance race that will be held at 1 pm on Sunday.  Details on those races appear below.

 

The event will take place on the beach in Barra de Potosi next to the enramada restaurants starting at 10 am and continuing until dark. It will also include fun races in panguitas, volleyball, music and sexy hombre and bikini contests.

 

The peaceful and picturesquevillageofBarra de Potosiis 30 minutes south of Zihuatanejo and sits at the end of a 15 kmlong beachof pure sand.  Laguna Potosi is the largest laguna in the Costa Grande region and the area is home to over 200 species of birds as well as endangered mammals and reptiles.  There are many small B&B’s and small hotels in the area and there will be camping available for entrants.

 

Featured Race Details

 

For the featured races, each kayak will be rated based on dimensions and placed in one of three classes based on Mayan Seas Kayaks standards; K (slowest; short, wide, heavy); KM (faster; longer narrower, lighter); KMR (fastest; longest, narrowest, lightest).  The entrants will also be divided into the following divisions:

 

Men’s Open- Ages 16 and up

Women’s Open- Ages 16 and up

Youth Men- Ages under 16

Youth Women- Ages under 16

Masters Men A- Ages 30-49

Masters Women A- Ages 30-49

Masters Men B- Ages 50-59

Masters Women B- Ages 50-59

Senior Masters Men- Ages 60+

Senior Masters Women- Ages 60+

 

Depending on the number of entrants, race officals may combine divisions so there are a minimum of three entrants in each division. Prizes will be awarded in each division and all entrants will receive a special regata tee shirt.

 

There will also be a mens and a womens championship prize awarded to the man and woman paddler with the lowest placings in the Open divisions of the two featured races.  For example, a man paddler who won the Men’s Open 1000 meter sprint and placed 3d in the Men’s Open 4000 meter race would have a combined placings of 4 (1+3).  In the event of a tie, the paddler finishing better in the 4000 meter race will be awarded the championship.

 

The entry fee for the featured races is 100 pesos for one or both events.  It can be paid at Barra de Potosi on Saturday October 22 or on race day, but advance registration is encouraged. The community will be arranging for special camping accomodations and discounts at local restaurants and by registering in advance, you will receive that information by email.

 

On Saturday early arrivals can tour the race course and  at 4 pm on Saturday there also will be a sea tour available for kayakers who want to paddle 3 kilometers to Los Morros, a seabird sanctuary. Local guides in pangas will accompany the tour to Los Morros.
