A great way to beat the heat in Zihua is to take in a movie. With air conditioning and comfortable seats, the local theaters offer incredible value for your peso. There are two theaters in downtown Zihuatanejo, showing two different films every week. Nightly showing times differ, but they usually start between 6:00-6:30 for the first show and between 8:00-8:30 for the second. If you go to the 6 o’clock you can stay for the 8 o’clock with the same ticket.
Don’t expect to catch the latest Hollywood blockbusters. The films tend to be in release for about six months before they get here, and often even older films are brought back if they were especially popular. But for a mere 17 pesos, can you really complain?
For those of you whose Spanish isn’t the greatest you’re in luck; almost all the films are in English with Spanish subtitles( the exceptions being animated features and national productions). Also, smokers will be delighted to know that you can light up without leaving your seat.
The movies rotate weekly usually on Thursdays or Fridays. As of the week of October 18th, now playing at CINE PARAISO (on the pedestrian walk at the corner of Nicolas Bravo and Cuauhtemoc): Enemy of the State, with Denzel Washington and Bruce Willis. At CINEMAS VICENTE GUERRERO (at the end of Benito Juarez, next to the Casa de Cultura), catch the excellent national production, Sexo Pudor y La Grimas, in Spanish without subtitles but entertaining and easy to follow even if your Spanish is poor. Playing at both theaters is The Crocodile, starring Bill Pullman ad Bridget Fonda.
